Cold Weather, Warm Celebrations

By: Becca Kadlec

Whether you’re a Capricorn, Aquarius, or a Pisces, winter birthdays can feel like the celebration is out of reach. Being snowed in, temperatures dropping, and flu season make it difficult to get everyone together. It’s even harder to want to leave your house. Here are five unique birthday ideas that’ll keep out the seasonal depression.

Who will be the drunkest tonight? 21+

By now, you’ve probably seen the TikTok trend where people host parties and each invitee dresses up as a character from a certain theme. The twist? Everybody takes their turn to film themselves in the bathroom as their character and tries to guess who will be the drunkest. (Spoiler alert: It’s usually the birthday girl).

Though the costumes might be time-consuming and require additional planning, it’s always fun to show up for your friend in the darkest of months. Plus, watching your besties dressed as SpongeBob SquarePants characters get absolutely trashed is worth the effort.

Ice Skating at Dilworth Park

If the weather ahead is looking bearable, one of the best ways to spend a Philly birthday is at Rothman Orthopedics Ice Rink. From now until February 22, you and your friends can watch each other fall at the outdoor skating rink right at City Hall. Temple students only have to pay $3 for admission on Thursday nights! Don’t worry, they have skating aids to lean on.

ACCT Philly’s Day Trip Program

Take a shelter dog out for a day! ACCT Philly offers their Day Trip Program where you can request to take a shelter dog on an unforgettable vacation away from their cage. For people who aren’t much of partiers and would rather be with a pooch instead,  this is a great opportunity to do good and feel good on your special day. Get your free birthday drink and a Pup Cup, cuddle up on the couch, and celebrate you and your new furry friend.

Clay Day

For an inexpensive birthday, grab some cheap, colored clay for you and your friends to try and recreate the inspo you can find on Pinterest. Make it a competition or just enjoy the meditating experience with your friends. This is also perfect for one of those colder, winter days where you just want to stay cozy inside. No skill is required, just show up and have fun!

Celebrating Inside with Zoom

Can’t see your friends in person? There’s no shame in getting together for a Zoom party! You can either stream a movie while sharing your screen or gossip over hot cocoa. The key to beautiful friendships always requires everyone’s safety to be prioritized. Plus, you can wear pajama bottoms without feeling guilty.

There is something so charming about celebrations during the winter months. How can anyone be cold and miserable when the people you love are just around the corner?
