By: Cece Hartford
Halloween is the time of year when everyone goes all out for their costumes! Whether it’s inspired by their favorite artist, fashion styles, or movies, we can all agree that the costumes are the best part of the Halloween season. Let’s take a look at the most popular Halloween costume trends from the 2000s to now!
2000-2010
The early 2000s were heavily inspired by pop music stars, Y2K fashion icons, and landmark movies of the time
Two of the most iconic cosplayers were Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. From Britney‘s iconic look from Baby, One More Time to Christina Aguilera’s bold styles inspired by her Dirrty era with a dollar-bill bikini and chaps. Along with these two icons, streetwear was also very popular! Oversized jerseys, do-rags, metallic chains, and oversized sunglasses inspired by hip-hop culture.
Now we can’t forget about movies and TV characters. In the 2000s, The Matrix, Charlie’s Angels, and Bring It On were very popular! With these movies gaining fame, their iconic costumes became a huge part of Y2K fashion.
As we move into 2005-2010, this generation was heavily influenced by blockbuster movies, pop music stars, and television sensations:
2005: Star Wars characters like Darth Vader and Princess Leia surged after the release of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith
2008: Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight made The Joker (along with Harley Quinn and Batman) one of the most-worn costumes of the year!
2010: Pop culture and reality TV dominated with Lady Gaga, Snooki from Jersey Shore, and Disney’s Rapunzel (Tangled)
2010-2015
As we continue into 2010-2015, top movies throughout the years skyrocketed costume ideas. As the web grew, viral internet culture took over as well, with Ylvis's "The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?)" and Miley Cyrus’s VMA performance look.
2010: Driven by Toy Story 3. Characters like Buzz Lightyear and Woody became extremely popular throughout all ages!
2012: The release of The Avengers and The Hunger Games made Captain America, Iron Man, and Katniss Everdeen massive hits.
2013/2014: Disney’s Frozen was released, with Anna and Elsa taking the top spots for children's and group costumes.
2016-2020
2016: Harley Quinn from Suicide Squad, alongside other DC Comics and Marvel Cinematic Universe characters
2019: The Joker (Joaquin Phoenix), Hocus Pocus witches, and characters from Stranger Things Season 3 with the 80’s-themed Scoops Ahoy outfits!
2020: Dominated by Tiger King, Joe Exotic, and Carole Baskin, classic duo costume ideas. Along with the surge of the Covid-19 pandemic and political rise, people got creative with their costume ideas. Healthcare workers, political figures, and Among Us video game characters were widely popular during the rise of the Coronavirus
Witches, dinosaurs, and Fortnite characters were iconic go-to costumes of the years
2021-2024
As we slowly start to wrap up the years, we can’t forget 2021–2024: Heavy reliance on the famous red Squid Game tracksuits, Stranger Things, Barbie, and Wednesday Addams. These TV/Movie Characters changed the game in film to costumes!
2025-2026
Currently in 2026, we continue with trendy looks. Recently:
Nikki ("Freaky Nikki" from Obsession): From the hit movie Obsession, she has become widely popular with her black and red striped top, black shorts, and gruesome makeup.
Greek Mythology & Fantasy: Outfits inspired by The Odyssey, fantasy warriors, and medieval knights.
Even as the years go by, Pop Culture/Music Moments, TV/Sports Favorites, and Family/Animated Hits continue to be the thrill of the season. This wide variety of fun costumes allows anyone of any age to have fun this Halloween season!
